The woodcut relief prints began as an exercise in 1994. Sometimes the need to see an image materialize is just too great to wait for the time to paint it out. The prints go through a more spontaneous path to see realization than my paintings do. Most of the images for the early prints came from sketches that were drawn up in a stream-of-consciousness type exercise. In this exercise I attempt a drawing a day for a set amount of days (a week, a month, several months) in order to explore memories, dreams, visions, etc. No image is off limits since I will be the only one to see it unless I choose to show it. The result is a spectrum of sketches - some great & some not so great. From these drawings come the images for the prints in one form or another. Sometimes a print may have the same composition as one of my paintings. Sometimes the prints inspire the creation of a painting. A few prints presented images that I felt I could not accomplish to my satisfaction in oil paints.

Every relief wood block print has been carved, inked and burnished by hand. No press is involved, which calls for the smaller number of prints in an edition.

The 2005 11 x 11” prints have developed from various ideas and sketches that deal with my experience as a son, husband and parent.

Once again each relief wood block print has been carved, inked and burnished by hand. The editions have been held to 25 prints on Sumi paper for each block.
